Sixty feet of presidential granite. Carved over fourteen years by four hundred workers. One of the most recognisable monuments in America.

This is a state visit.

Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Lincoln. Four of the greatest men in American history, and not one of them has ever looked more at peace. They’ve been standing there since 1941 waiting for somebody to finally show them a bit of proper respect, and Scotland’s turned up with a box of cones and sorted it in an afternoon.

The flag’s up as well. Just so there’s no confusion about who’s been here.

FOUR PRESIDENTS. FOUR CONES. ONE SALTIRE.

America’s had this mountain for eighty-odd years.
It’s never looked better.
